Let’s be honest, group workout classes can be a blast. The music is pumping, the energy is high, and you leave dripping in sweat. But if you’re chasing visible results, defined curves, and true body composition change, those 45-minute, cardio-dominant sessions might not be delivering what you really need. In order to get the defined look you want, strength training needs to be a part of your regular workout routine. Here’s why your workout class isn’t gonna cut it long-term, and what to do instead.
Most group fitness classes are built around cardio. There are a variety of HIIT, dance, spin, or fast-paced, bootcamp style classes. While these can feel effective (hello, endorphins), they’re often designed to keep your heart rate up, not to build muscle. A common trap many fall into is thinking the more steps you get, the more calories you burn, or the more you sweat in a workout, the more effective it is, and that simply isn’t true!
While you might sweat buckets and rack up a lot of steps doing one of these classes, it won’t be effective for getting those long term results that creates a change in body composition and muscle mass.
There are many misconceptions surrounding strength training and muscle, which is a separate topic to be covered. However for the sake of this post, please hear me on this – you WANT muscle! You want to lift weights, especially as you get older. Muscle isn’t just about strength, it’s the key to health and getting those “toned” arms, a defined waist, and yes, that flatter stomach. Cardio alone won’t get you there, and in fact, could be hindering you.
If your goal is to shape your body, build strength, and create definition, you need progressive strength training. That means lifting weights in a strategic, intentional way, not just grabbing 5-10lbs during a speed round of squats.
In fast-paced class settings, proper form often takes a backseat to intensity. Classes cause many to fall into the “do more” mindset, and cause you to strive to get more reps, more rounds, more speed, which can actually lead to overuse injuries or plateaus. Without coaching that prioritizes how you move, not just how much, you’re not getting the return you deserve on your time and effort.
Proper form is essential when it comes to workouts, especially strength training moves. Not only does it protect against injuries, but it also prevents discomfort during the exercise, which makes moves easier and more enjoyable.
Most class-based fitness models don’t follow a training plan or cycle. You’re either doing something different every time, with no consistent progression, or you’re doing the exact same class every time, with little to no variation.
In both of these scenarios, you don’t get the structure needed for long-term progress. Not to mention, repeating the same class with little variation can lead to plateaus as your body becomes accustomed to the movements.
Mixing it up and doing different classes every time is fun, but it lacks the progressive strength planning needed for effective long-term progress. You’ve heard the saying, a failure to plan is a plan to fail, well it is true!
Your body needs structure and progression.
If you’re just hopping into whatever workout looks good or fits your schedule that day, you’re not building toward anything specific. And if your training isn’t specific, neither are your results.
If you have goals, your workouts and training should reflect that. To achieve those goals and see lasting results, you need:
You don’t have to settle for random classes and random results. You deserve a plan that works as hard as you do.
